The Friends of Roper Lake wish to extend gratitude to all of the volunteers who supported our  June 12th Roper Lake Run and Family Day.  Because of your generosity, it was a successful event.

We had a number of goals in mind when we planned the venue.  The first was to draw attention to Roper as a local resource for recreation.  Second, we hoped to attract people to the Park who would not normally frequent it, thus increasing our population base.  Third, we wanted to add some revenue to the gate and make a little money for our dedicated, tax-exempt account in the AZ State Park Foundation.  Lastly, and most importantly,  we just wanted the community to have fun at Roper Lake State Park.  We believe we accomplished all of our goals!

It couldn’t have happened without you.  Thank you so much for being a part of our first event.  It is amazing to witness your generosity at a time when the economy is struggling.  Your support is testimony to the generosity of this community.  We look forward to our continued work together to save our gem in the desert, Roper Lake State Park.

By the way, if you would like to join our Roper Lake Askers committee, we’d love to have you on board.  We are responsible for fundraising.  The more the merrier!  Just contact Paulette LeBlanc at (928) 428-9330 or pleblanc@aznex.net

June 12:  Fun Run & Family Day
Roper Lake State Park

About 50 people showed up for the event, which featured fun runs and walks for all age groups. These events were designed to raise money via entry fees for the park and support the Friends Group in their endeavors to meet park needs.

One of the more popular competitions was the 5k run, which drew 26 entries (click here to see the spreadsheet and bib numbers with times for all fun runners).

The winners of the men's division were: Peter Lujan, first; Tom Schnell, second; and Tommy Schnell, third. The winners of the women's division were: Gina Richardson, first; Sara Clifford, second; and Lauren Clifford, third. Please click here to see all the runners by bib # who ran in this competition.

The winner of the children's race was Joseph Scanlon, age 7.   His prize?  A Pirate of the Caribbean fishing rod (donated by Gila Outdoor).   We know that Joe will use this to fish in the bass filled Roper Lake.

Unfortunately, only one pet and owner (Roxi and Reagan Larson) showed up for the pet run, so no race was held this year :(  That's ok, Roxi, we know you will take first place next year at our 2nd Annual Fun Run!

Thank you, Paulette, for canvassing the business community for prizes!   And the business community arose to the occasion.  Many great prizes were donated.    So a great big thank you to our business leaders also!"

In ending, a good time was had by all.  We will do it again next year.   Hope to see you there, you could be one of our winners!
